Are Baby Teeth Important?

Your child’s baby teeth play an important role in their dental health. Even though baby teeth will fall out, taking excellent care of them can ensure greater oral hygiene later in life. If you’re looking for a dentist near you, Rector Family Dental and Orthodontics is here to provide exceptional pediatric dental care from the moment your child starts teething.

Baby teeth are essential for development, helping your child learn how to speak, chew, and smile. Starting good dental hygiene as early as the eruption of their first tooth can lower your child’s risk of tooth decay and gum disease as their smile develops. Our kid-friendly family dental practice in Muncie, IN is here to help you navigate your child’s oral health to help them achieve healthy smiles for life.

When Do Baby Teeth Start to Show?

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, most children have their first tooth come in by age one, or as early as six months of age for some. Typically, the first baby teeth to erupt are the central incisors, the two bottom front teeth. After the front bottom teeth come in, the top front teeth will soon follow. Most children will have their full set of primary teeth by age three.

During this time, your child may exhibit signs of teething, such as drooling due to sore gums. You can help ease these symptoms by gently massaging your child’s gums or offering them a teething ring. Every child develops differently, and our dental team is here to support you and your child as they grow into their healthy smile.

How to Brush Your Baby’s Teeth

At birth, start by gently cleaning your child’s gums with a damp washcloth or your finger after feedings. Once your child’s first tooth erupts, begin a twice daily brushing routine. For children three years of age and younger, use a rice-sized smear of fluoridated toothpaste and a soft infant toothbrush to carefully clean their new teeth.

When to Take Your Child for a Dental Visit

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends bringing your child in for their first dental visit by their first birthday or when their first tooth emerges, whichever comes first. At Rector Family Dental and Orthodontics, we have talented pediatric dentists and general dentists on our team to ensure your child can achieve their best smile starting with their first tooth and throughout adulthood. We’re here to help you and your child establish a dental home where they can achieve healthy smiles for life.
